Celebrate World Food Safety Day on June 7, 2024: Ensuring Safe Food for All

The Significance of World Food Safety Day

Food safety is essential for maintaining public health, preventing foodborne illnesses, and promoting sustainable food systems. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 600 million people fall ill each year due to foodborne diseases, with 420,000 fatalities, including 125,000 children under the age of five (World Food Safety Day 2024) .

World Food Safety Day aims to raise awareness about the risks of foodborne illnesses and promote actions to prevent them. It also recognizes the efforts of food safety professionals who work tirelessly to ensure our food is safe from farm to table (Testbook) .

History of World Food Safety Day

The journey to establishing World Food Safety Day began with a proposal by Costa Rica, which led to the adoption of the resolution by the United Nations General Assembly on December 20, 2018. The day was first celebrated in 2019 and has since become a vital platform for highlighting the importance of food safety worldwide (World Food Safety Day 2024) .

Theme for 2024: "Food Safety: Prepare for the Unexpected"

This year’s theme underscores the necessity of being prepared for food safety incidents, whether they arise from accidents, inadequate controls, food fraud, or natural events. It highlights the shared responsibility of governments, food producers, and consumers in ensuring food safety (World Health Organization (WHO)) .

How to Celebrate and Get Involved

  1. Educational Campaigns: Participate in or organize local workshops, seminars, and conferences that focus on food safety practices and innovations.
  2. Social Media Awareness: Use social media platforms to spread awareness about World Food Safety Day and share tips on safe food handling practices.
  3. Community Engagement: Encourage local food businesses and farmers to adopt and showcase best practices in food safety.
  4. Personal Responsibility: Practice safe food handling in your own kitchen by washing hands, cooking food to the right temperatures, and avoiding cross-contamination.

Global Collaboration

World Food Safety Day is a call to action for governments, international organizations, and individuals to work together to improve food safety practices. The WHO and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) play a pivotal role in facilitating this observance, providing resources and guidance to ensure the day is marked globally (World Food Safety Day 2024) .

By participating in World Food Safety Day, you contribute to a global effort to prevent foodborne illnesses, protect public health, and ensure that the food we eat is safe and nutritious. Let's all take a step towards a safer food future on June 7th, 2024.
