Essential Documents for Filing Your 2024-25 Income Tax Return (ITR)

As we enter the new financial year, it's crucial to prepare for filing your income tax return (ITR) for the year 2024-25. To ensure a smooth and hassle-free filing process, it's essential to gather all the necessary documents beforehand. In this blog post, we'll outline the key documents you'll need to file your tax return effectively.

1. Form 16: Form 16 is perhaps the most important document for salaried individuals. It is provided by your employer and contains details of your salary, tax deductions, and TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) for the financial year.

2. Bank Statements: Gather your bank statements for all your savings and current accounts for the relevant financial year. These statements provide a comprehensive overview of your financial transactions, including interest earned on savings accounts and fixed deposits.

3. Investment Proof: If you've made any investments eligible for tax deductions under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, such as investments in Provident Fund (PF), Public Provident Fund (PPF), Equity Linked Saving Schemes (ELSS), or life insurance premiums, ensure you have the necessary investment proof handy.

4. House Rent Receipts: If you're a salaried individual living in rented accommodation and claiming House Rent Allowance (HRA), make sure you collect rent receipts from your landlord. These receipts will serve as proof of your rental expenses.

5. Form 26AS: Form 26AS is a consolidated statement that contains details of tax deducted on your income and deposited against your PAN (Permanent Account Number) by deductors such as employers, banks, or tenants. It also includes details of tax refunds, if any.

6. Aadhaar Card/PAN Card: Ensure you have a copy of your Aadhaar Card and PAN Card, as these are essential documents for e-filing your tax return. Make sure that your Aadhaar Card is linked with your PAN Card to avoid any discrepancies.

7. Details of Other Income: If you have additional sources of income apart from your salary, such as rental income, interest income, or capital gains, gather relevant documents such as rent agreements, bank statements, or transaction details from stockbrokers.

8. Form 16A/16B/16C: Apart from Form 16, you may receive other TDS certificates such as Form 16A for TDS on income other than salary, Form 16B for TDS on sale of property, and Form 16C for TDS on rental income. Make sure you collect these certificates if applicable.
